Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) occur when micro organisms enter the urinary tract when a catheter is in place, and an infection occurs. The majority of CAUTIs are preventable.
Goal: By September 27, 2018, a 20 percent reduction in CAUTI
Resources to prevent CAUTI:
Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI)
CLABSI is a bloodstream infection that occurs within a central line - a catheter used to deliver or measure a patient's essential fluids.
Goal: By September 27, 2018, a 20 percent reduction in CLABSI
Resources to prevent CLABSI:
Clostridioides difficile Infection (C. diff or CDI) and Antibiotic Stewardship
Clostridioides difficile infection (C. diff or CDI) commonly occurs after prolonged exposure to antibiotics, resulting in diarrhea, CAUTIs, and Sepsis.
Goal: By September 27, 2018, a 20 percent reduction in CDI
Resources to prevent CDI:
Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO)
Multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) are microorganisms, predominantly bacteria, that create infections which are resistant to one or more antimicrobial agents. Common MDROs include:
- Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
- Staphylococcus aureus with resistance to vancomycin (VISA/VRSA)
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE)
- Extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing gram-negative bacilli (ESBLs)
- Multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (MDRSP)
- Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE)
- Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter
Goal: By September 27, 2018, a 20 percent reduction in MDRO
Resources to prevent MDRO:
Surgical Site Infection (SSI)
Surgical site infections are infections that occur in the wound created by an invasive surgical procedure.
The HIIN is focused on reducing SSI from:
- Colon surgery
- Abdominal hysterectomies
- Knee replacement
- Hip replacement
Goal: By September 27, 2018, a 20 percent reduction in SSI
Resources to prevent SSI:
Ventilator-Associated Event (VAE)
Ventilator-associated events are lung infections, such as pneumonia, and other complications occurring in patients who are on mechanical ventilation breathing apparatuses.
Goal: By September 27, 2018, a 20 percent reduction in VAE
Resources to prevent VAE:
