Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Scope of Practice
Senate Bill 1352 by Senator Denise Grimsley (R-Sebring) passed by a 5-4 vote in the Health Policy Committee. The bill was amended to authorize advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) to prescribe controlled substances within the framework of a supervisory physician protocol and would authorize psychiatric- mental health APRNs to initiate and release patients for involuntary examination under Baker Act. The bill also includes a provision requiring the rates charged for reproduction of medical records to be the same regardless of format or medium. The bill will now be referred to the Judiciary Committee for consideration. Similar legislation in the House - House Bill 7071 by Representative Cary Pigman (R-Sebring) and the Select Committee on Health Care Workforce Innovation - has been referred to Health and Human Services Committee for consideration.
