Infection Prevention Hot Topic: Ventilator-associated Events
Florida’s State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) is focused on the goal of improving the standardized infection ratio (SIR) through implementation of VAE preventative practices through training, education and encouraging the use of evidence-based interventions.
Overview
While mechanical ventilation can be a lifesaving intervention for patients in a critical care setting, it can also put patients at risk for experiencing ventilator-associated events which can lead to extended hospital stays and continued dependence on mechanical ventilation. This increases the possibility for adverse outcomes for increased antibiotic utilization, hospital-acquired infections, and mortality.
The webinar series is led by nationally recognized infection prevention expert, Linda Greene, RN, MPS, CIC, FAPIC who will be presenting and reviewing the strategies to prevent VAE in acute care hospitals. As a subject matter expert, Linda was the lead author and editor for APIC’s guide to non-ventilator-associated pneumonia and was a contributing author to the 2014 and 2022 Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology (ICHE) Guide to Prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP).
